The day after the conference sessions (Thursday, October 2, 2025) the following excursion will be organized:
Gyeongbokgung Palace is located with Bugaksan Mountain as a backdrop and Yukjo Street in front of Gwanghwamun Gate. The name "Gyeongbokgung" means "the new dynasty shall have good fortunes and prosper." It is the place where Hunminjeongeum (Korean script) was created. The palace was destroyed during the Japanese invasion in 1592 and was restored in 1867 by King Gojong, including the addition of new buildings like Geoncheonggung Palace, Taewonjeon Hall, and Jibokjae. Tragically, Empress Myeongseong was assassinated in 1895 at Okhoru Pavilion. The palace was systematically destroyed starting with the Korea-Japan Treaty of 1910, used for the Joseon Industrial Exhibition in 1915, and overshadowed by the Governor-General of Joseon building in 1926. The restoration project began in the 1990s, the Governor-General building was demolished in 1996, and areas like Heungnyemun Gate, royal living quarters, Geoncheonggung Palace, Taewonjeon Hall, and Gwanghwamun Gate have been restored to their current state.
Gwanghwamun Plaza opened to the public in August 2022 after renovation. Sejong-ro (Seoul's main street) has been reborn as a historical and cultural space through the restoration of Yukjo Street. The reconstruction of Woldae (Elevated Ceremonial Stage) and the restoration of the Haetae statue (an imaginary animal) have been completed. Traces of Yukjo Street near Sejong-ro Park have been restored, including a scale model installed. This is an excellent place for a stroll with beautiful scenery, including Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bugaksan Mountain.
